Prison reform & Agriculture mess…

Soon you will be set a class essay on the performance of the NI Executive. This post looks at two topical issues in the news regarding actions taken by NI Ministers.
1. Prison reform
2. European fines over poor performance by the Dept of Agriculture

The Justice Dept is responding to a report that makes clear that there are too many prison officers. The Department is looking to give a redundancy package to 540 prison officers. Sf and dup both accept reform is necessary. Although it will cost £60m it will save the Justice Department money in the long run.

The European Commission in Brussels have fined NI £80m due to the dept of agriculture’s ineptitude. NI farmers were receiving European subsidies based on old inaccurate farming maps and have to pay these back on top of the fines. The dept of agriculture blunder has cost the taxpayer money and is a clear example of our executive needing to improve its performance.
